Measuring your opening is a pretty straight forward process. The difficulty sometimes lies in not understanding either the terminology used in our industry or the exact start/end position of each dimension.
Measurements are categorised primarily into two categories, these are:

Opening Sizes

Opening sizes identify the width and height of each opening. This is the dimension your door panels will be manufactured to suit.

Opening Dimension Example Overall Width (Brick to Brick Sizes) Overall Height (Floor to underside of reveal/lintel)
Width/Height Width (Brick to Brick) Height

Clearance Sizes

Clearance sizes identifies the space to the side of the opening and above the opening. Sometimes it may also be required to measure the length of the garage depending on the garage type. These dimensions are required to identify and constraints in fitting the garage door. Depending on the type of installation (flush fit or face fit – refer to our section on opening types for further details on this) will depend on where these dimensions are taken.

Our easy to read survey form will ensure this is an easy process to understand and follow.

Clearance Sizes Explained

Whilst the opening and clearance dimensions are both as important as each other, understanding the importance of the clearance sizes will help you identify any possible constraints you may face when measuring for your garage door. In addition these dimensions sometimes dictate what type of door is suitable for your opening.

As an example if the room to the side of the opening is 300mm and we require 80mm to install the tracks, there will be 220mm of wall showing on each side of the garage door once the tracks have been installed.  This is more than adequate and would cause no problems whatsoever at installation stage.

In the event that there was only 50mm available each side of the opening this would cause a problem as the 80mm tracks would sit 30mm into the opening and be visible from the outside.
Identifying clearance dimensions allows any constraints to be identified at an early stage.

In the event that there are some constraints with your opening, we usually have a solution to overcome such difficulties. For further advice or help with any dimensions please contact us where a member of staff will be happy to offer free friendly professional advice.
